Simon folded his arms. “Look, let’s just forget that idea. I don’t get on with your kind, except with you and Luke. I know they can’t kill me, but some things are worse than death.” He didn’t really know what he was saying; it was all sort of falling out of his mouth. He didn’t know what to say. The conversation was going haywire.
Simon really wanted to go out with Maia. Maybe if it was just to a small place, maybe a little park or a swimming pool… or something. And he wanted no one else to come. Just for it to be him and Maia. “I don’t know what we should do,” he said. “I would really prefer it if we were alone though. I hate having other people trudging along.”
He was shocked with Maia’s sudden change of tone. He didn’t know what to say or what to do. This was getting really weird and really awkward fast. “Um… OK… so…” but that so would never have an ending. He couldn’t put the words together. He felt rejected.
He paused for a bit, staring into her eyes. “I know,” he said, “How about we go to Taki’s. Together. Maybe we can talk things over there.”

"Fine, Simon, if that's what you want." Sometimes Maia still thought of Simon as the 16 year old he looked like. He was so stubborn, it was annoying. "But if you aren't going to work there, can you at least look for a job somewhere else?" Maia pictured him with a McDonalds uniform on saying, "Would you like fries with that?" and smiled. Simon would never want to work there.
Maia couldn't help it, she wanted to go out Simon. Even though he was a vampire, a daylighter, and looked like a teenager. Maia hated the fact that she couldn't date him. But maybe one outing couldn't hurt.... "Yeah ok, just us then, no third wheels." Maia felt butterflies in her stomach. Had she really just agreed to go out with Simon alone?
Maia looked away from Simon. She didn't want to explain that the shadowhuters still scared her, or that she didn't want to be around a happy family because it reminded her of her family. He might understand, but Maia still didn't want to explain. She looked at him again, even if she was going to explain, now wouldn't be the right moment. "Ok Taki's, sure. Fine with me, let's go"
