Maia walked up the driveway to Simon's house thinking about their odd relationship. He was a vampire, one that could walk around in the daylight but still a vampire nonetheless, and she was a werewolf. By all accounts they should be enemies. They should cringe at the sight of each other and go into fight mode whenever they were in the same room. But, somehow, they were friends.
Sometimes Maia wished that they could be more than friends but she was positive that Simon didn't feel the same way. How could he? He was a sexy vampire that never aged and Maia was a girl that sprouted fangs and fur once a month. She could barely believe that they were friends, she wouldn't even be able to wrap her head around the fact that they were dating. If they were, which they aren't.
Maia sighed and sat down by Simon's front door to wait for him. They were friends, just friends. It had to be enough for her right now, otherwise she would just be miserable and depressed all the time. Maia hated feeling that way. But she also hated vampires and here she was, about to walk into one's house. Well there are exceptions to every rule, and Simon had always been exceptional.

Simon lay on the couch watching as many random shows as he could. He knew that Maia would be coming over soon, and he wanted to pass the time. He liked Maia. She was so kind and nice... but they would never be right together. He was a vampire, and she a werewolf. It just didn't work like that at all. He was never going to age, were as Maia would grow old, as she already was. That was what made Simon sad. He loved Maia, but did she feel the same way? He wondered what she thought about him.
He didn't really know the main reason of why Vampires hated werewolves so. He new about the different backgrounds and that, but he just didn't understand why they couldn't just get along normally. Or maybe it was just a random reaction that they all felt, like they must always fight each other.
He heard it when she walked up the driveway. He jumped up quickly and switched the television off. He hoped that this would be a good meeting, that they could discuss important things like the future.
He opened the door and saw her standing there. He smiled, just like he always did when he saw her. "Hello," he said.

Maia heard the T.V. go off and knew that Simon must have heard her walking up the driveway, he always did. She still didn't know how she was going to be just friends with him, she had absolutely no idea what to say. She would just stick to neutral topics, like the weather.
When he opened the door, Maia felt a twinge of jealousy. He got to go along in life being young and beautiful all the time, whereas Maia had to age, get wrinkles, and gray hairs. Life was so unfair sometimes.
"Hey Simon. How are you?" Maia asked, then smiled back at him. Maybe talking to him would be easier than she thought. She walked into his house and looked around. It hadn't changed since the last time Maia had been over, something she had expected. Simon didn't seem like the type to redecorate. Or to rethink things he'd already previously thought out, like their relationship.

Simon didn’t really know how to reply to this. How was he feeling? Was he nervous about seeing her, unhappy that they wouldn’t be able to spend forever with each other, happy that they were seeing each other now…. Instead, he just decided on a simple, “I’m great thanks.” He smiled. That was his usual reply to that commonly asked question.
He hoped that this conversation wouldn’t end badly. He thought of all of the bad things that she could say, like we’re breaking up, you’re not right for me, I hate you, I love you… this list could really go on forever. He decided to try and keep the conversation steady. “How are you?” he said.
He stood at the door way, leaning against the wall, waiting for her reply. Everything seemed to be going slowly these days, even as a vampire.

Maia smiled again at his reply, she had anticipated that one. There were some things about Simon that were so predictable."That's good." She didn't really know what else to say. Simon, I love you didn't seem like that good of a conversation starter so she just waited for him to say something.
Luckily, he thought of something quickly. "Oh I'm fine, today was just a normal day. I worked at the store with Luke. We just got a new shipment of books so, I was shelving those and there was this one that sounded really good but I didn't get it. It was SciFi and that's not really my thing but maybe I should get it next time, it's always good to try new things....."Maia trailed off as soon as she realized that she was nervously rambling.
She always babbled when she was nervous. Maia hoped that Simon hadn't picked up on that. So, she took a deep breath to calm herself and tried to focus on what Simon was saying. She'd only been here about five minutes but it seemed like an eternity, it was going to be a long night.

Simon was glad that she had come up with something. He likes hearing her voice. "So you don't like Sci-Fi because they edit the real thing. Sparkly vampires, schools for wizards..." he smiled, not sure on how to end this topic. He laughed nervously as he ended his sentence.
He didn't know what to say. His people skills were still lacking a little bit. "My day has been... very boring," he said. At least she had had something to do. He had been sitting on the couch for the last couple of hours. Before that he had been play pac-man.
He sighed, thinking about how he would be stuck like this forever. He couldn't be killed by anyone, not with the Mark he had on his forehead. Could he kill himself? Maia would never let him. He didn't want to loose everyone, but it would happen one day, and he would have to face the facts.

Maia rolled her eyes. Guys. "Are you saying that don't like sparkly vampires and schools for wizards? You are so totally jealous of Harry and Edward." Without waiting for a reply, because she knew it was true, she turned and went into the living room.
She looked around and saw video games. Is this all he did all day? "Simon, is this all you do everyday? Don't take this the wrong way but..... you really need a life." Maia hoped he didn't get mad, she only said it because it was true. Sitting around watching TV and playing video games was pathetic. He was a daylighter! What was he doing stuck inside all day?
Maia wondered if Clary had been over recently, and if she had, had she said something to Simon too? Maybe, if he didn't go back into the real world, they could have some kind of joint intervention. "So how's Clary these days?" Best to find out what she was up to before making any plans. "And her kid... Angel? How's she?"

Simon laughed and opened his mouth to respond, but she had already turned to walk inside the house. He followed her in there. "Edward and Harry," he muttered, "Pppfffftt."
He watched her as she looked into the computer screen. "I'm dead, Maia. I can't have a life," he said simply, which was true. How possible could he have a life when he was dead and doomed to walk upon the earth forever? He only wished that he could take Maia with him, but she was alive. Was is possible to turn werewolves into vampires?...
NO! he thought. He would never doom this on anyone. He felt like slapping himself for the thought, but Maia would get suspicious.
"Clary's been good," he said. At least she's alive. He smiled, trying to make sure that his thoughts weren't coming out on his face. "I haven't seen her in a while. Angel is good, from what I hear," he said. She was growing up so quickly these days that he couldn't keep up with her.

Maia thought about what Simon had said, about how being dead meant he couldn't have a life. It was stupid, crazy, and preposterous. She was a werewolf and she still had a life. He could have a life too, he just wasn't trying hard enough. Being stuck inside his house wasn't doing him any good.
She whirled around and stared him straight in the eye. "Simon you are still a person. You need to socialize with other people. Go clubbing or shopping, get a job. Do something outside of this house, it's not healthy being holed up in here all the time. Simon please, please, promise me you'll go out and do something besides play video games." Maia looked at the ground. "Please?"
Maia was sort of embarrassed after her little speech, but if it got Simon out of his house.... Maia raised her eyes and cleared her throat. "Yeah I, uh, haven't really talked to her in awhile. I haven't seen Angel in forever either. I've seen some pictures but that's about it. Losing touch with people is easier than you think." Maia hoped he caught the hidden meaning in her words. She didn't know how else to get through to him.

Simon stood there. He didn't really know what to say. Raphael had told him that he had to accept that he was dead, and he only just was. Everyone and everything was growing up in front of him, and he was just the same Simon as he was 20 years ago.
"I am a person," he said, "I'm just not a normal one. You're more normal than me. And where would I get a job? The blood bar at Taki's? I don't think so." He was feeling angry at himself, and didn't want Maia to think that he was angry at her. "What do you want to do? You can take me out, anywhere," he said, and smiled. "I don't want to play video games all day and night."
Simon sighed and then thought of something. "I know, we should go and visit Clary and Angel. That would be fun," he said.

Maia studied Simon carefully. Physically, he looked exactly the same as he had been when they were sixteen. But mentally he was the same age as Maia. The only clue to his age were his deep, tired eyes. She felt bad for Simon, while everyone else was off growing up and making families, he was stuck.
Maia stopped staring and started listening to him. "What about the bookstore? Luke knows who and what you are, and the job is super easy." Maia smiled at the thought of Simon working in the store. Although it was the best idea she had right now, she could probably find something better. "And I don't really go out out, you'd have to ask Isabelle for help on that one."
Maia was a teensy bit jealous of the pretty shadowhunter, but that wasn't the issue. What had Simon just said? Visiting Clary and Angel? "Oh, uh, I don't know Simon.... They're like your family, maybe you should just do that by yourself." Maia didn't really have any desire to visit them if Simon was going to get out of the house. One Christmas card a year was enough contact for her.

Simon was beginning to seriously envy Maia now. She was so beautiful, and would one day marry the perfect guy, and be happy, all while Simon would watch by the side lines, still the same as he would always be. They could never be together, it was just so unnatural.
He looked up at Maia. “I couldn’t work there. Luke may know me, but some of the other werewolves hold grudges on me.” He sighed. “I can’t even get a mundane job! There is Macca’s. My mum used to call it Chew and Spew…” he trailed off. Thinking of his mum didn’t make him feel any good. When he told her… the look on her face…. Her last words: You monster. Nothing could ever be worse than that. “I think we should go out. Together. It would be fun and I would be out from the house. Plus, I’m so over Isabelle.” He smiled.
She suddenly looked shocked. “I think we should. Last time I saw them, they asked me how you were going, and this time you’re asking about them. You’ve both got lots of catching up to do, she would appreciate it.” He said. “They are like my family, and I’d like you to see them,” he said, smiling.

Maia sighed and rolled her eyes. When had Simon become so dramatic? He was getting all worked up over nothing. "Simon, come on. Why would werewolves hold a grudge against you? Let's just try you working at the store for a little bit...." Maia hoped he would listen to her. How did he even pay his bills now?
She thought about going out with him. They could always go to the movies or something. "Why don't we meet Isabelle somewhere sometime? She could she us around and stuff." There it wouldn't feel like a date at all if Isabelle came too. And the conversation probably wouldn't lag.
Maia thought about the last time she had seen any of the shadowhunters. They had been terrifying as usual while they asked around about some disturbance or other. It hadn't really been all that bad, but being around a family of them still frightened Maia a little. "No, I don't think so." She said to Simon while trying to think of a way to get out of going.

Simon leaned on one foot. “I can’t. It just doesn’t feel…. Natural. I know they don’t like me. Remember your first impression on me being a vampire?” He said. He hoped that this would make her too angry. That was not his aim at all.
Simon really did want to leave the house. He didn’t want to spend the rest of his life in here, cramped up. “No, not with Isabelle, please. She’s just so…. I don’t know. Different. We should go out together.” He knew that it wouldn’t look right. She looked about 30, and he was 16. She could pass as his mother, and he hated thinking that. It made him wince.
He wanted Maia to see some of his friends again. He didn’t want to go alone, because that felt weird. And he couldn’t properly visit the institute because it was hallowed ground. That annoyed him a lot, because if he was…normal, he would probably reside there. “Why not? They like you. Please, for me?”

Maia did remember her first reaction to Simon being a vampire. She had reacted on instinct, and if Clary hadn't been there something much worse would have happened. "But Simon, that was before I knew you. And even if the other werewolves are holding grudges against you why would it matter, it's not like they can do anything to hurt you." With the mark on his head nothing could hurt him, physically anyway.
Maia didn't know about going out with Simon. She didn't know what they would do, they didn't really have anything in common. Maybe they could go out to eat. But did he even eat real food or just drink blood? Maia sighed. She wished that things were easier. "Um, ok, I guess. If you can find something for us to do." Hopefully he wouldn't.
Maia thought about the last time she had seen her family and quickly dismissed the thought. It had been years and it was no use crying over spilled milk. "I said no Simon. Drop it." Maia sent him an evil death stare to shut him up. She didn't want to go to see them, why wouldn't he just leave her alone?
