you loved me 'cause I'm fragile. When I thought that I was strong. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Avalon smiled, the sound of rain hitting her umbrella was relaxing - even if the rest of her was getting wet, save her feet. The sidewalks were slick with water and she had thought they would have been empty. New York had proved her wrong. She moved along with the crowd, headed towards the mall - in need of a few new articles of clothing since Lance had had a fit and trashed a few of her band tees. She'd been pissed and nicked some money to replace them.
She glanced to her left and then right, jaywalking across the road to the mall. If everyone else could, why not she? A horn honked at her and she scowled flipping the bird at whomever had been annoying her. She clung to her anime purse, and dashed the rest of the way. The revolving doors made her smile as she shook her umbrella and slipped inside the dry building. A raucous noise blasted her eardrums. Other teens and adults had the same idea as her, it seemed.
A shiver hit her and she wished she would have worn her black cardigan as well. She headed off towards the directory, hanging her umbrella on the straps of her bag. The thing hit her in the side of her leg as if it were a saber on a musketeer. "Bugger. I forgot yank stores were different. No Librety® for me." Her dark eyes gazed at the list of stores, eyes locking on GAP. That was one she knew! She then looked for the food court. If they had corn-dogs, she'd never leave...

I LIKE IT IN THE CITY WHEN TWO WORLDS COLLIDE - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - What was it about this place that kept compelling Sam to return? It certainly wasn't for the shopping, as he'd yet to drop a dime in the place on anything except for food. And yet, more often than not, he'd found himself here during his spare time, the breaks in between training and resisting the impulses to do something stupid. It was hard. He'd been doing stupid things for a long time, kicking the habit proved to be a bit more difficult than he'd originally anticipated.
Ruffling his damp hair, Sam attempted to dislodge the more persistent drops of water clinging to his hair. He hadn't thought to bring an umbrella with him, and was somewhat sodden by the time he'd pushed through the revolving doors. Too bad there wasn't a water-repellent rune...that would come in handy on rainy days. He dismissed the frivolous thought promptly, making his way to an empty bench and slouching down in what he'd observed to be an average teenage way. He'd been people-watching a lot lately, trying to pick up a few mundane habits so he didn't stand out so much. Since meeting that girl in the mall, he'd been trying to blend in more, go unnoticed.
Today was just another chance to improve his people-watching skills, and he glanced around lazily, until his eyes locked onto a very pretty girl, who appeared to be his age, poring over a large map of the mall. Even though she was very cute, that wasn't what drew Sam's attention; rather, the demon standing hardly a foot behind her drew his attention. For all intents and purposes, it could have been a man, if not for the veins all but jumping out of his skin, and bulging eyes the color of choke cherries. Of course, to everyone else, he looked like a perfectly normal guy. And even though Sam wasn't about to admit it, he was actually pretty attractive. Cursed demons.
"Excuse me, miss?" Oh, great. Now the demon was talking to the pretty girl. Sam slipped his stele into his hand, wondering if anyone would notice if he threw up a glamour right now; and his eyes fell on the security guard who was staring at him intently. Well that wasn't a good thing. He focused his attention back on the demon, mind racing as he tried to come up with a way to kill him without glamouring or looking like a psychopath. It wasn't coming. "I work for MAC makeup, and today we're doing a special promotion for free make-overs." He pointed towards the shop, and sure enough, a sign plastered over the front window declared as much. "I was just wondering if you'd be interested." He flashed her a perfect smile, and Sam's eyes narrowed. Using makeup to catch girls? That was just low. Damn dirty demons.

you loved me 'cause I'm fragile. When I thought that I was strong. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - She heard the gentleman speak before she even noticed she wasn't alone near the directory. When had he popped up? Flinching slightly she turned, it made her uneasy when people snuck up behind her. He seemed rather handsome, but already she knew he wasn't her type. Rather old and he seemed far too put on himself, like an actor trying for the lead role. "I work for MAC makeup, and today we're doing a special promotion for free make-overs. ...I was just wondering if you'd be interested." Avalon stared hard at the man and gave a timid smile. Free make-overs? It was hardly her thing. She knew her colour, season, and all that rot - why would she want a make-over, for goodness sake! Did American girls not know any of that? She frowned softly and pulled her purse closer to her. "That's all right, sir. I know how to do my make-up. Thank you for the offer, though."
She moved to her left, and away from him, finally noticing the soaked teenager for the first time. If this man persisted she'd sally on over to him and pretend he was her date for the day. If it worked back home, who's to say it wouldn't here. Her soft eyes glanced back over to the man, and felt a little pity for the way he looked now. All sullen, almost like a lost puppy, but she bit on the inside of her cheeks - Arthur's voice repeating like a broken tune 'If your uncomfortable, Avie, just leave.' She felt like running, almost as if she were a doe in hunting season with an arrow trained for her heart. Avalon took a deep breathe, and smiled softly at the employee. "You do know that you can always ask the other girls in the food court if they would like one. I'm sure one will." Her accent cut through as she spoke softly, trying to be helpful as she made her escape as stealthily as possible. She waited for him to acknowledge what she said, even almost came close to moving forward to touch his arm and make sure he was all right... But Avalon wasn't that dumb, even if she wasn't a true-blue New Yorker. "Sir? Are you ok?" His head snapped back at her and she jerked back. Terror ate her stomach and her eyes widened a bit. 'He looks far too intense to be OK...'

I LIKE IT IN THE CITY WHEN TWO WORLDS COLLIDE - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - A grin spread across Sam's face as the girl was clever enough to turn down the too-attractive man, at least she had good instincts. That, or she was happy with her makeup choices. He'd toss a coin later to settle it. The demon-posing-as-a-man's face fell, and it looked like he was sulking. Wimp. He looked like he was going to say something else, but then her eyes shifted, and abruptly the watcher had become the watched. Sam wasn't entirely sure he liked that gleam in her eyes as she looked at him, and he certainly didn't like the look he got when the demon followed her gaze. Apparently the demon didn't like having its date eye other guys.
"I'm sure you're right, miss. Thanks anyways." The demon replied with a polite nod, and Sam sighed with irritation. She probably was right, unfortunately. Eventually, he'd find some poor girl with low self-esteem, lure her into the back room, and consume her life force before she even got her first coat of lip gloss. Which Sam couldn't allow. He stood up, hands in his pockets to hide the runes he'd hastily drawn for strength and speed, the demon's face contorting with rage as he noticed the teenage boy approaching.
"Look no further. Willing guinea pig, right here. Do your worst." Sam joked as he got closer, a smile that didn't reach his eyes plastered across his face. The demon scowled.
"This isn't a joke."
"Whose laughing? You know, I actually woke up this morning, and I wondered to myself; am I a summer or a winter? I really don't know. That's how hopeless I am." He shrugged, wearing an expression of feigned confusion. He really didn't know any of that, but he also didn't care to.
The demon figured that he might as well get a meal out of this, even if it wasn't his intended; besides, he'd wipe that smug smirk off the boy's face as he watched the life drain from his eyes. "Of course. Right this way." He smiled and gestured towards the back room of the makeup shop, claiming the front was all busy. Sam paused only to wink at the pretty girl briefly, then followed the demon to what was likely going to be someone's doom.

you loved me 'cause I'm fragile. When I thought that I was strong. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - "Look no further. Willing guinea pig, right here. Do your worst." Avalon turned her head and watched as the guy walked over. A small smile slid onto her lips, which she hastily covered up as best she could. Had she known he would be this cute up close, she would have dashed over to him earlier. Hastily she looked over towards the older gentleman, not finding his tone or stance welcoming as it had been with her. And then it clicked in her mind. This man had to be sick in the head to target the younger generations. It was beastly, really. "Of course. Right this way."
Avalon gasped softly as the boy winked at her and followed the elder off toward the shop. Something just wasn't right. She took a few steps forward only to stop and glance around swiftly. If there was a scuffle, wouldn't there be a mall police force? Her eyes hit the security guard to her left, near where the boy had come from. She moved over to him, ignoring the duo leaving for the back of the shop. "Sir, I'm so sorry to bother you. But - well, I'm not sure, it's an assumption - I believe that gentleman my mate left with is planning to do something barmy." She saw the scoffing look in the officer's eyes and she scowled. He didn't care, did he? He probably saw just another teen off to pick a fight. Nothing that worried him, she guessed. "Sir?! Aren't you going to do anything? Augh, you know, if you were on the force back in England, you'd be discharged for failure to help a citizen!" she snapped, wheeling around on the heels of her rain-boots, only to almost slip and be caught by the guard. Wrenching her shoulder out of the man's grasp, she went to take a step forward, only to notice the two were gone. She gasped again. Was she too late to stop the pervert from preying on the other teen?!

I LIKE IT IN THE CITY WHEN TWO WORLDS COLLIDE - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Looking over his shoulder to see the mundane girl arguing with the security guard who'd been glaring at him earlier, and he smiled to himself. That was sweet of her. He'd have to make this quick, in case she actually succeeded in getting help. He doubted it, but she had those big, innocent eyes for which even grown men seemed to have a soft spot. Sam obviously did, entering the cramped and dimly-lit back room. Not exactly ideal for a fight; at least he'd have the element of surprise on his side.
For now, his attention snapped back to the demon, who was just closing the door behind them, turning the lock to keep everybody else out. At least they wouldn't be interrupted. Sam had taken his hands out of his pockets as soon as the demon had decided he was just another harmless mundie, and now he reached into his jacket for the long knife he'd stowed there before leaving. He never left the house without a weapon concealed somewhere, he was a shadowhunter, if a young and inexperienced one, ready to attack as the demon turned around.
Not long after they'd entered, there was a loud crash that was mostly covered by the blaring music the store was playing, causing only a few patrons to glance up before they shrugged it off, and the lock on the back room clicked open. The door swung open, and Sam stepped out, wincing and holding his head. There was no sign of the man he'd gone in with, although there was a long, black stain on the arm of his jacket. He scowled at that; it was going to take forever to get that out. Stupid demon blood. At least the body had disappeared, sent back to whatever strange world it had come from once the demon was dead. Ignoring an angry look from one of the shop girls, who rushed into the back room to repair whatever damage he'd done, Sam decided it was probably best to leave the store before they called security.

you loved me 'cause I'm fragile. When I thought that I was strong. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - She snarled at how the stupid guard was. If there was a skirmish and the real police were involved she'd point the blame on him, dang it. Avalon quickly strode over to the store, keeping at the doors and away from the workers and customers. Where was that guy? She couldn't see him through the array of humans and colours, and she gnawed harshly on her bottom lip. Her eyes locked on his dark jacket with what seemed to be dark, black maybe with a hint of reddish tint, hair dye on the arm moving from the back room and a worker rush into it. "Are you OK? Did that git try anything on you? You should report him." She prattled on, nervously, eyes glancing back to the room he had left - waiting for the other to come out as well.
She finally placed her gaze on him, looking for any injuries as discretely as possible. With all her archery tourneys, she'd learned to carry a first aid kit with her when she was out of the flat. She stepped away from the store, giving him room to leave. She wondered for a second if she should just go to Gap and get her day over with. But in a sense, he'd stepped in and removed attention from her. Avalon glanced over to the security guard and glared, tempted to stick her tongue out at the old bat, but thought better of it - it was too childish anyways. "I'm Avalon. Thank you for helping me." 'Who said chivalry was dead? Oh Gloriana, that is too cliched, even in my mind!' she thought, a small smile lighting up her face. She pulled on her purse again, bringing it and her umbrella closer to her in an almost defensive state, as if she were still waiting for another to pounce upon the two of them. "I'd - I'd like to repay you for your help. Er, well. I mean, if that's all right."

I LIKE IT IN THE CITY WHEN TWO WORLDS COLLIDE - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Sam couldn't help but smile when Avalon approached him, fluttering around him like a nervous mother hen. He listened to her prattle on, trying not to laugh. It was unusual for someone to actually be worried about him; his mother worried, but she just yelled at him instead of showing any actual concern. It was kind of a nice feeling. "Relax, I'm fine. Just decided eyeliner wasn't really my thing." He'd hit his head when one of the shelving units fell, but aside from a little bump, he was okay. He'd had worse.
When she started looking him over, Sam couldn't help but blush a little. Was she checking him out? He told himself she probably wasn't, he wasn't that confident, but even so, his eyes flicked up and down the length of her before settling on her face. "Anytime. I'm Sam." He grinned at her in return, she was really pretty when she smiled. He blinked when she offered to repay him, not sure how he should respond to that.
"Uh...you wanna just get something to eat instead?" He offered with a noncommittal shrug, gesturing to the food court. Fighting was hungry work, Sam could use something to eat. All the better if he had something nice to look at- err, talk to- while he ate.

Avalon smiled brighter, remembering that the name 'Sam' was derived from the name Samuel - Hebrew for God has heard. She blushed softly, from both him looking over her and for her internal dorkiness. She pulled a bit more on her bag, the straps falling off her shoulder slightly. Not really caring about it, she glanced over him once more, eyes locking down on the stain. It looked awful, like something out of a horror/sci-fi movie, something like a mix of an acidic ingredient and maybe sulfuric. "Club soda. For, erm, - for your jacket, it works wonders. My granmum always kept some around for my older brother and me when I was younger."
She laughed softly - mind wrapping around an odd little memory - and began knocking her shoes together , glad that she was making a thudding sound to keep herself calm. "Uh...you wanna just get something to eat instead?" Avalon nodded her head slowly, her eyes lighting up softly. She was feeling just a little hungry, probably from nerves, she guessed. "Sure, and I'll pay. It'll be my way of thanking you." She gave another smile, hoping he wouldn't decline. With £188.49 in her pocket, she gathered it was close to - what - maybe a little over three hundred American dollars, she wouldn't mind spending it on her rescuer.

I LIKE IT IN THE CITY WHEN TWO WORLDS COLLIDE - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Sam's eyes widened guiltily as she pointed out the stain on his arm and gave him advice on how to clean it, she was more observant than he thought. "Oh...err, thanks. Must've spilled something on it in the back room."
He paused, then decided that was insufficent, and continued. "Like, makeup, or...something. Yeah. So you have an older brother?" This wasn't going so well, so Sam decided it was probably in his best interest to just change the subject. No wonder Shadowhunters kept to themselves; having a conversation with a mundie was exhausting. He was glad that she seemed pleased with his suggestion of getting food, he didn't want her to feel like she had to hang around with him just because he'd kind of saved her life. Not that she knew that she was in danger of having her life's energy carved out like a Thanksgiving turkey. She just thought she'd been rescued from some kind of creep. Which she was, in the general sense that all demons were creeps. Ugh. he needed to stop thinking. "You don't have to do that." He dismissed her offer out of hand, what kind of guy would he be if he let her buy his food? Even if she did owe him. Okay, so maybe it was stupid to let something like who paid for their cheeseburgers threaten his masculinity, but he was fifteen years old, and he was talking to a pretty girl. "You don't have to repay me at all. Think of it more as a public service to the mall...somebody had to stop that guy from terrorizing beautiful girls. If anything, the community at large owes me, not you." He grinned, it was true, but Shadowhunters didn't get recognition, or thanks. it was kinda part of being a secret society. you loved me 'cause I'm fragile. When I thought that I was strong. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - "...So you have an older brother?" Avalon laughed softly, mumbling the word 'Unfortunately' in good fun. She adored her older brother, and saw him more of a father figure than Lance ever was. Lance was just - well - there. She pushed her thoughts out of her mind and glanced up at Sam's face, locking on his eyes. "Arthur, he's four years older than I am... Studying parapsychology at NYU this semester - er, well I think." She laughed softly once more - it was more of a nervous twitter than a laugh, but a laugh nonetheless, not really sure if it was NYU or some other university or college in the area.
"You don't have to repay me at all. Think of it more as a public service to the mall...somebody had to stop that guy from terrorizing beautiful girls. If anything, the community at large owes me, not you." Ava blinked, had she said something wrong? Maybe it was a guy thing, having to be on the paying end of the relationship. Er, what? Another blush tinted the bridge of her nose at his compliment at her. She glanced over toward the food court, trying to to hide her blush as best she could. "At least we can count on you and not the mall police force. Prats wouldn't know an issue if it bit them on the bum! Oh! Sorry, I don't mean to be so shirty." Ava blanched slightly, forgetting that most Americans hardly knew her slang save the things they probably read in Harry Potter. How would she explain all of that correctly?! She needed to carry a slanguage dictionary around with her or something. And if he didn't want her to repay him then what could she do...? Heaving a small sigh she pulled on another smile. "Well then, shall we go? Er, you might need to lead the way. It's actually my first time here since I moved."

He had no idea what that was, and he had no intention of admitting his ignorance. "You guys are close?"
He guessed, he'd caught the barely-mumbled word, but her expression spoke otherwise. "That's cool. I always wanted a younger brother or sister to push around." He said laughingly, he had always wanted a sibling, but he had been a mistake. His mom wasn't about to make another. "I'm an only child." He shrugged off her comments about mall security, he had no intention of becoming the mall-vigilante, but he wouldn't tell her that. It wasn't like he could just explain that he only specialized in warding off the 'special' creeps. He smirked briefly when he saw her blush, but didn't say anything about it; it was cute. Sam grinned and pointed in the direction of the food court, almost embarrassed by his intimate knowledge of the mall, but unwilling to show it, he led the way. He was pleasantly surprised when she admitted to having just moved here. Her accent was pretty heavy, but her British slang didn't really phase him; Idris was near England, so there was a bit of language transfer. He spoke like an American only because that was where his mother was raised. "Just moved here? Where are you from?" He considered telling her he was new, too, but where could he say he was from? Only somewhere in the States, and other than the names of cities, he didn't really know much about anywhere in America. Well, he'd just wait and see. Avalon smiled softly, she used to wish she had been an only child. But at the thought of it being just her and Lance, she was glad Artie was there to keep her sane most of the time. She muttered softly in reply to his question, an almost squeak of a 'Yes' came out of her and she glanced over in the direction he had pointed at. Well at least she had been right in the direction she thought the Food Court was at. "Just moved here? Where are you from?"
She gave a bright smile, thinking back to her small little cottage-like home in the City of Bristol. She missed it, a little too much, but then who wouldn't when one was a dual citizen to both the UK and USA who spent most of their life in England? "I'm from London, but I spent most of my life in the City of Bristol. What about you? New York all the way, or something?" She paused in her speaking and gave a small laugh. "No, I bet you spent most of your life traveling." He just seemed like the type of guy that couldn't sit still to her, one that had to be moving about to gain now experiences. She'd always wanted be that type of a person, the Traveler... But England was the one place she wanted to explore now more than ever...
She took a few steps ahead of him and turned slightly, watching him like an aspiring artist staring at David would do for the first time. Observing him almost, in a discreet manner of course. She was glad for the first time since she came to New York, that she'd been able to at least feel like her old self once again.

I LIKE IT IN THE CITY WHEN TWO WORLDS COLLIDE - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Sam nodded, and grinned. He'd been to London a couple of times, his mom had a lot of conferences and things there, and he'd always tagged along. "I've been to Bristol...just the once. I was real young at the time, though." His mother took him there to visit someone, but he couldn't for the life of him remember who. He gave something between a nod and a shrug when she guessed that he was a traveler, it was an apt enough description, and certainly better than the truth.
"Something like that. This is actually my first time in New York...got myself shipped off to boarding school here." It wasn't exactly accurate, but it was about as close to the truth as he could come. Besides, the Institute was a kind of school; just of the variety that taught you to kill things.
Sam slowed slightly, almost drawing to a halt when she walked ahead of him, a quizzical expression crossing his face and abruptly turning to a blush when he realized she was looking at him. He looked away slightly, pretending not to notice her gaze, picking something at random to stare at instead, feeling more awkward than he thought he should, yet unable to help himself. The girls in Idris mostly just looked at him like they wanted to punch him in the teeth, eager to prove they were just as capable as any male shadowhunter; he didn't doubt them. He'd gotten plenty of bruises over the years to prove it. With Avalon, he didn't know how to react, but he felt that preemptive blocking probably wasn't the right course of action. He kept walking.

you loved me 'cause I'm fragile. When I thought that I was strong. It surprised her that it was his first time in New York as well, but she guessed that whatever boarding school he was at had to have been good to have students staying there. She loathed her public school, but money had been tight and she couldn't have gone to a private school like she had had back home. "I've been to Bristol...just the once. I was real young at the time, though." "I miss it. My granmum's still there and the time difference is horrendous to her. So I haven't had a chance to talk with her." She stopped talking for a second. He was probably having some troubles like that as well, what with him being in a boarding school and all. Avalon wished she hadn't have opened her mouth now.
Glancing around, she fell silent as she tried to memorize her surroundings. Her mind filtered the process like a read-through of a play's script. The random shops and other places as the setting, her footsteps the directions... And the dialogue, probably her thoughts as she moved onwards. Her stomach grumbled softly, almost in a hushed moan, and she blushed - utterly embarrassed. "So, er, where's the best place to eat 'round here?" she quipped suddenly. She grinned softly, finding the change of topic a little better to handle. Plus, maybe the transition for school to food would put him at ease too.
