My strengths and Weaknesses
A clever boy, Sam is quite capable in a fight and has always excelled at training. However, he’s always preferred to use his talents to create mischief than to put them toward the greater good. He’s very smart and learns quickly, when he wants to, but usually he’s too much of a slacker to apply himself and find other ventures to occupy his interests. He enjoys the fight, as any good Shadowhunter does, but he can be arrogant at times and bites off more than he can chew. He doesn’t like to ask for help or admit his own weaknesses, and can be very determined, almost to the point of stubbornness, when he feels challenged. Since coming to New York, he wants to prove himself, to his mother, the Clave, and even himself, so he’s trying to put his trouble-making ways aside; but he’s not sure if he’ll be able to kick the habit. He’s immature and irresponsible, but he’s trying to fix that.
My History
Twenty years ago, when Valentine loosed his demon army on the world and Shadowhunters and Downworlders had to unite to survive the onslaught, many young Shadowhunters had to fight alongside those they had once feared and persecuted. Sophia Blackwell was one such youngster, having turned eighteen scant weeks prior to the battle. Partnered to a vampire, over the course of the short battle, Sophia found the long-held preconceptions of her people to be in error, and following their victory, she took it upon herself to change the way all Shadowhunters thought, and to ensure equality between the races.
She became a champion of Downworlders rights, and even an unexpected pregnancy and the birth of a son whose father’s identity she refused to reveal wouldn’t slow her down. For her efforts, she was made Headmistress of the Alicante Academy for Young Shadowhunters, where she made it her life’s work to eliminate discrimination and prejudice against downworlders through education.
Raised by a single mother who seemed to care more about Downworlders and their rights than about him, Sam had always been a rebellious child. From the time he could crawl, he was pushing boundaries and testing his mother’s limits; that didn’t change at all when he started attending the Academy. Despite his mother’s position, Sam was always the class clown; he played pranks on professors and students alike and acted out in perhaps every way imaginable. He embarrassed his mother, but the majority of his pranks were harmless, if immature; Same knew where to draw the line.
Except one time. Sam decided to start the new school year off with a bang, and planned something quite extraordinary for the day. But he didn’t take into account that this was the first year the Academy would be taking Downworlder students along with Shadowhunters, and when his prank went wrong, a Werewolf girl was hurt. Not too badly, but enough that his prank was labeled a hate-crime. Despite his apologies, no one would listen, and his mother quickly came to the decision that since it was obvious she couldn’t deal with her son’s behavior, she requested that he be sent to one of the Institutes elsewhere in the world to continue his education. Her request was granted, and Sam was sent through a portal to New York City to complete his training.

The whole world thought he was a bigot. Well, okay, maybe not the whole world, but everyone in his world did. He couldn't even walk down the street without getting a few head shakes, some glares. No one cared that it was an accident, no one would listen to him. He was a criminal now, because he'd made a mistake. One lousy mistake. But that didn't even sound true to his own ears. He stuffed some more clothes into his suitcase with more violence than was strictly necessary, trying not to think about it. The truth was, he'd made a lot of mistakes, and he knew it. His mom had cut him a lot of slack through the years...maybe he's always been trying to push her to this, to see how much it would take before she snapped. Well, now he knew.
He was packing to leave Alicante. He wasn't sure for how long, but he was pretty sure this was a form of exile, if unofficial. Sam didn't want to leave, but at the same time, he was glad of it. He couldn' stand to be here anymore, constantly judged, with everyone refusing to listen to him, even if he wanted to apologize. He didn't expect the Shadowhunters in New York to be much different, of course, but there were Mundanes there, too. A whole city of people who'd never heard his name and didn't think he was a criminal. A chance to prove he didn't hate Downworlders, and he could be a great Shadowhunter...he was determined. Now he just had to see it through. He closed his suitcase with a click, and glanced for a final time around his room, barer than it had been in years, but still bearing undeniable evidence of his habitation. He wasn't sure when he'd be back, but when he was, he knew he'd have proven himself. To everyone.
